Types of Therapy

You may wonder what type of therapy I do when I work with clients. There are many fancy terms and types of therapy and below is a general guideline as to how I approach my practice.

Christ at the center

People have four areas of life that include physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual. Many try to approach all areas with the exception of spiritual and it is like a “three-legged stool ” that you expect to stand. If people are open to finding Christ at the center of their lives and relationships, I use scripture, prayer, music, bible study, reflection and Theophostic prayer as to how to help people find Christ at the center.

Person centered

I believe people have the internal resources that are needed for personal growth and I work to empower you through empathy and believing in you as a person. This positive regard can help folks move past being “stuck” and help them to feel that they have someone to help them work through the challenges that they experience in life.

Cognitive behavioral

This approach has to do with exploring how people think and act. I use a wonderful tool to discern your emotions, triggers, bodily reactions, thoughts, urges, behaviors and consequences. Once we identify these areas, I encourage you to explore both the positive and negative thoughts and behaviors in order to develop insight as to how your thinking and behavior can impact the outcome.

Relationships

I use the Prepare and Enrich Inventory for pre-married couples and the Couple Check-up for clients who are married or involved in a serious relationship. This inventory explores key relationship areas to include communication, conflict resolution, financial management, leisure activities, sexual relationship, family and friends, spiritual beliefs, roles and responsibilities, children and parenting. It also maps out each person’s personality scale.

I also like to use the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory to help people understand themselves and one another. This introspective self-report questionnaire is designed to indicate psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions.

Other tools include The Flag Page Solution, The DISC profile, Beck Depression Inventory, The Amen Clinic Anxiety/Depression Type Questionnaire.
